How to install a WordPress plugin?

November 9, 2016

The core of WordPress is designed to be lean and lightweight, to maximize flexibility and minimize code bloat. WordPress plugins then offer custom functions and features so that each user can tailor their site to their specific needs. WordPress Plugins are available from several sources. The most popular and official source for WordPress Plugins is the Official WordPress Plugins Repository.

There’re several ways to install a WordPress plugin. In this article, I have covered two methods:

Install a WordPress plugin using the WordPress plugin directory

This is the easiest way to install a WordPress plugin. Aside from thousands of plugins available for free to download at the official WordPress plugin directory, there’re tons of commercial ones available from third-party companies and developers. All you need to do is choosing the right ones, which match your requirements.

First, go to your WordPress admin and click on: Plugins » Add New

Add new plugin

On the next screen, you can find the plugin by typing the plugin name or the functionality you are looking for. After that, you will see a list of available plugins like the example below:

Add new plugin - step 2

Now you can pick the plugin that is best for you, and click the “Install Now” button.

Tips: the number of Active installs and the number of Reviews is a good point

WordPress will now download and install the plugin for you. After this, click the Activate button to activate the plugin:

That’s all, you have successfully installed your first WordPress plugin.

Manually installing a WordPress plugin

Many Premium WordPress plugins are not listed in the WordPress plugin directory, so they cannot be installed using the above method. So we need to to use the WordPress upload method to install such plugins.

Consider that you have a plugin available on your computer (a .zip file). You need to go to WordPress admin area and visit Plugins » Add New page, then click on Upload Plugin button on top of the page.

On next page, click on the choose file button and select your plugin file.

After that, click on the Install Now button to install your plugin.

WordPress will now upload the plugin file from your computer and install it for you. You will see a success message like this after the installation is finished.

Once installed, you need to click on the Activate Plugin button to active the plugin. That’s all.

You would have to configure the plugin’s settings to fit your needs. These settings will vary for each plugin.

I hope this article helped you learn how to install WordPress plugins.
