New features in WordPress 4.7 “Vaughan”

December 7, 2016

Version 4.7 of WordPress, named “Vaughan” in honor of legendary jazz vocalist Sarah “Sassy” Vaughan, is the last major release of the year 2016 and is available for download or update in your WordPress dashboard right now. In this article, I’ll show you the list of new features in 4.7 which you should try to get your site set up the way you want it.

Note: please remember to backup your site before starting the update.

New default theme: Twenty Seventeen

Twenty Seventeen focuses on business sites and features a customizable front page with multiple sections. It also includes  immersive featured images and video headers, and graceful mobile-first design. This theme works great in many languages, on any device, and for a wide range of users.

Video Header

WordPress 4.7 extends the Custom Header feature to introduce support for video. Video headers are considered decorative elements — like header images, but with motion. With that in mind, they play automatically, loop by default, and don’t have sound. They work best when paired with an image, so they can progressively enhance the experience when video is supported.

Users can use their own video (in mp4 format) or add a YouTube URL.

Theme Starter Cont

Theme Starter Content

t: 30px;">Themes now can provide starter content on a brand new site, in order to help users set up their sites quickly. Users need to go to the Theme Customizer and the starter content will be displayed. But please keep in mind that nothing will be saved until you click on the Save button.

Visible icons appear in Theme Customizer preview to show you which parts of your site can be customized.  It is really helpful for new users, who can now just click on a shortcut and get straight to editing.
