What is WordPress? – WordPress is a web software you can use to create a beautiful website, blog, or app. This is free and priceless.

And if you are relatively new to WordPress, you might be wondering about the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com. In this article, I’m going to cover the key differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org.

» You can make money from it by using your own ads, and doing things your way. You cannot use custom analytics software because you cannot add custom codes. » Custom Analytics and Tracking

What is WordPress.com

Takes care of all of the hosting for you. You don’t have to download software, pay for hosting, or manage a web server.

We can call it a WordPress blog, which comes with a free address like yourname.wordpress.com.

WordPress.orgWhat is WordPress.org

Where you’ll find the free WordPress software that you can download and install on your own web server.

» It’s free and easy to set up.

» You can get rid of the .wordpress.com part and use a custom domain name instead, like yourname.comAdding a domain is a paid upgrade.

» You’ll need to find a host, and perform backups and maintenance yourself (most of the showcase sites you see on the WordPress site showcase are the self-hosted version of WordPress, since many of them have unique functionality or a custom-made design.)
» You also can’t upload any custom themes, plugins or modify the PHP code behind your site.  » Install anything you want (themes & plugins).
» You are NOT allowed to sell ads on your site unless you receive 25,000 pageviews per month. In which case, you have to apply to try their feature called Ad control. The approval process doesn’t cost you any money, but you have to split your revenues 50/50 with them.
» You are restricted to their analytics.
» They can change or delete your site at any time if they think it violates their Terms of Service.  » You own your property!
» Personal support and the WordPress.com forums are always available.  » Visit the WordPress.org support forums for assistance.
» You must register for an account on WordPress.com and abide by our Terms of Service.  » No registration with WordPress.org is required.

Basically, WordPress.com is for who are not interested in paying for their own hosting, managing their own web server or paying someone else to handle that for them. But if you are trying to launch a simple blog or an e-commerce site, whether you want to market yourself somehow to grow an audience, traffic, or customer base, WordPress.org is the best option here.

I hope this article will help you to say goodbye to confusion and hello to knowing which platform is right for you.
