There’re 2 ways to install a WordPress theme from WordPress Admin:
- Choose and install theme from the official WordPress theme directory (free themes only)
- Install a theme by using upload method from WordPress Admin.
Before installing a wordpress theme, please keep in mind that if you activate a new theme, that will change how your website looks and how it works too.
Note: Depending on the theme, it may add additional settings options that you may need to configure either through the theme customizer or through a separate options panel.
Choose and Install a theme from the official WordPress theme directory
Login to your WordPress admin area. Next, click on Apperance » Themes.
Next, click to Add New button at the top. On the next screen, you can see the list of Featured themes available.
That’s not all. You can use Feature Filter to search for theme specific features too. Check those tags and click Apply Filter button.
Now, you will see the list of themes meet your search. Hover your mouse on top of theme’s image and you will see 2 options: Install and Preview. Click on blue Install button.
WordPress will install that theme for you
Finally, click on the Activate button, and you’ve successfully installed and activated your WordPress theme.
Install a theme by using upload method from WordPress Admin.
This method allows you to install WordPress theme that’s not listed in the official WordPress directory (eg, Premium theme from companies like StudioPress, iThemes, etc).
Make sure that you have a .zip file of the theme you want to install. Click on Appearance » Themes » Add New button. On the next screen, click on the Upload Theme button.
Click the Choose File button on the next screen, select the .zip file of your theme from your local computer and press the Install Now button.
WordPress will upload and install your theme just in few seconds. Click on Activate button under the message on the next screen for successful theme installation.
